Pharmacy: dispensing, prescriptions and insurance claims

How prescriptions, controlled drugs, NHIS and other payers work end to end in MerxumOS.

    1 min read

A pharmacy is not just a shop with medicines on the shelf — what you dispense, to whom, from which batch and who pays for it all has to be recorded. MerxumOS handles that as part of the ordinary sale rather than as paperwork done afterwards.

    Dispensing against a prescription

    1. Record the prescription against the patient — the prescriber, the items and the quantities.
    2. Dispense at the till. You can dispense in full or in part; a patient who cannot afford the whole course leaves with what they can pay for.
    3. What is still outstanding stays on the prescription, so it appears on the follow-up list instead of being forgotten.
    4. The patient's record keeps the history, along with allergies and chronic conditions.
Note — Prescription-only medicines can be blocked at the till unless a prescription is on file. The message names the medicine that is blocking the sale, so the dispenser knows exactly what to fix.

    Insurance and other payers

NHIS is supported alongside HMOs and corporate schemes. Each payer has its own covered price, so the system works out the payer's share and the patient's portion at the counter. Claims are batched, submitted, and then reconciled against what was actually paid — so a shortfall is a figure you can chase rather than a surprise at the end of the month.

    Controlled drugs

Controlled substances have their own dispensing log, separate from ordinary sales, recording what left and against which authority.

Tip — Set drug-aware reorder levels rather than a flat minimum — MerxumOS uses your own sales history and the supplier's lead time, which matters more for a slow-moving specialist antibiotic than for paracetamol.
